Okay, so I don’t believe in lip/cheek tints. I’ve tried them all and don’t want to hear about it. I’ve never experienced one that was equally pretty on both lips and cheeks. It’s impossible to do both well! It’s like engaging in 69…one side always loses.
[Actually, let me revise that. I don’t believe in them as a tool for prettifying both lips and cheeks, but I do like some — Stila’s Convertible Color, Too Faced Bloom Lip & Cheek Color — because I enjoy what they do for one or the other.]
Honestly, why would I think this would look good on me?
Here’s the thing. I’ve been doing this for sixteen years. Admittedly, I can be the worst thing a beauty editor/writer/blogger can be: JADED. A cosmetics curmudgeon. Side-eyeing every new launch with a “been there, boo” sigh and a condescending pat on the head. Like, what could possibly blow my wig off at this point? So, when Shu Uemura’s Gelato Lip and Cheek Color in Spiced Orange came my way, I barely blinked. First of all, it was a product I didn’t believe in. Secondly, THE COLOR WAS BRIGHTER THAN BRIGHT. Like, an HR Puff-n-Stuff psychedelic orange sherbet shade that would only be appropriate at the Rusty Anchor. It sat in my beauty bins. And sat and sat. And then Lina had a half-day, so clearly we were playing with makeup — and I finally opened this electric tangerine situation. You already know what I’m going to say.

I don’t know how those Shu Uemura geniuses did it, but not only does the texture perfectly adjust for skin and lips (it feels velvet-smooth and ungreasy on both), the shade is totally fantastic. Somehow, it blends out into this lovely, springy melon-pink situation that’s just so flattering. In a fresh, happy way. I love it. I am sold.
On this one. None of the others.
