3 Styles that Won’t Damage Your Edges

What’s easier than scooping your hair into a ponytail, tucking it into a bun and heading out the door? Well, if you’re like me and have edges that break with only modest stress, styles like ponytails and buns are not quite so easy. So, in an effort to wear edge friendly styles I’ve modified some hairstyles so I get the look I desire without putting unnecessary strain on my hairline.

The styles below are on freshly washed hair but you can certainly style dry hair. I have my hair in four twists in the back (twists from my pre-wash detangling) and 2 to 3 large twists in the front.

1. Flat Twist Ponytail

Each section in the front is twisted into two sections then pinned back without tugging on the edges. I then place the hair in the back in a hair accessory (the Flexi 8). Don’t worry if your edges being frizzy. Simply secure with a satin scarf for 10-15 minute for a simple, neat twisted ponytail.

2. Loose Twist Bun

If you prefer not to have the appearance of twists this style may work for you. In two large sections in the front begin to twist the hair starting half way down the section of hair, such that the twist will not show in the front. I pin those twists back then place them a hair accessory being sure not to pull on my edges. I am only concerned with putting the twist in the hair accessory NOT tugging on my edges.  I pin up the twists in a bun. You can feel free to leave the twists down or let them dry for a twist out ponytail.

Smooth Edged Bun

This is a way to achieve the classic bun without hurting your airline. The sections at the top is now combined to make one large section. I then pull all of the hair in a bun securely. Yes, my edges will feel pressure, but only for a minute. I place the loose hair from the top section of the hair in the ponytail over the twists in the ponytail and tuck them under with bobby pins. I then tie the hair down with a satin scarf. Lastly, I very gently remove the hair accessory. You can either go to bed or wait 15 minutes. Remove the scarf, add the hair accessory but with the hair neatly set there is no need to pull the hair tightly. And there you have it. Easy, breezy beautiful natural girl!
