5 Lightweight Detangling Sprays for Natural and Transitioning Hair

Does your hair need a mid-week detangling pick-me-up, but you don’t want it to get weighed down with product?

Sometimes, navigating through the hair with detangling conditioners and products like Kinky Curly Knot Today are less than optimal. They can be a little too heavy, and sometimes too time consuming. Plus, summertime is all about light, fluffy, and touchable hair, right? A product that’s a little lighter and more versatile is definitely in order. The options below harness enough detangling power to navigate through knots, while being moisturizing and conditioning to the hair and also serving as refresher sprays. These products are also ideal for transitioning. They help soften and manage the line of demarcation and tangle-prone natural hair, while not weighing down relaxed or heat damaged ends.

Try these 5 products to pump moisture and detangleability into your hair, without sacrificing style:

1. Lawrence Ray Concepts Shake & Go

Shake & Go is the TRUTH! The first time I tried it, I was in love. One spray had a section of my hair frizz-free, shiny- defined, detangled, and whipped into shape. It is a detangling dream, I kid you not. Of all the detanglers on the list, this one is my hands-down favorite. It will work through your toughest tangles in no time. Although it does contain cones, it is also packed with aloe, jojoba, silk protein, and keratin amino acids that will help condition, soften, strengthen, and patch up damaged cuticles.

2. Soultanicals Knot So Fast Detangling Kink Drink

Talk about slip in a spray bottle! This botanical blend of slippery elm, marshmallow root, aloe, and more is the perfect detangler for ladies who follow the “Curly Girl Method”, because it contains no silicones. True to Soultanicals style, this product is all natural and made with only the best ingredients that will moisturize, detangle, and improve the health of your hair. Spray a little or spray a lot, and watch this product work its magic. Or, you can see me test it out here:

3.  Infusium 23 Pro-Vitamin B5 Leave-In Treatment

Although this product is designed to be a leave-in, I’ve found many ways to make this liter of liquid gold (it’s actually more milky-looking) work for me. Simply pour it into a spray bottle, and gently mist your hair and begin detangling. Even if you accidentally use too much, the worst you end up with is wet hair. The product is watery and light enough to not cause the greasies, making it perfect to detangle or refresh. Bonus: it’s packed with vitamins and aminos to nourish, repair, and revitalize the hair.  [See also: using Infusium 23 to restore hydration to dry, frizzy hair]

4. Shea Moisture Kids Coconut & Hibiscus Extra Moisturizing Detangler Spray

Not just for kids! This Shea Moisture spray detangler gets rave reviews all around the interwebs — for kiddos, naturals, and transitioners alike. This water-based spray is made with coconut oil, shea butter, glycerin, slippery elm, and more to not only hydrate and detangle strands, but to condition them and help prevent breakage. Another curly girl-friendly option, this detangling spray is silicone-free, and contains some organic ingredients.

5. DIY Detangling Spray Recipe

If you’re into DIY recipes and home mixtress-ing, here’s a super slippy conditioning concoction that will hydrate, condition, and send tangles packing. In a spray bottle, add:

1.5 cups of water

3 tablespoons of marshmallow root (boiled on low heat for 15 – 20 minutes and strained)

3 tablespoons of conditioner (I recommend Aussie Moist, tgin Triple Moisture Replenishing Conditioner, or Shea Moisture African Black Soap Balancing Conditioner)

1 tablespoon of oil (I recommend jojoba, rosehip, sea buckthorn, or apricot)

5 – 7 drops of essential oil (lavender, rosemary, peppermint, orange, or your favorite fragrance)

You can also play with the ratios to make the spray thicker or thinner.
