Introduce yourself!
Latoya: My name is Latoya (right) and I am from New Jersey. I graduated nursing school as a Licensed Practical Nurse. I am currently practicing to take my state boards exam. I am also a Fashion Designer, and I model with my sister.
Latana: My name is Latana (left) and I am from New Jersey. I am a Teacher Assistant and Fashion Designer.
Why did you make the decision to go natural?
Latoya: I was inspired by many bloggers and women from YouTube. I also got tired of wearing weaves and was up for a challenge.
Latana: I was also inspired by various women on YouTube and blogs. My scalp was always very sensitive, so when I got perms it always burned and left scabs in my head. I told my sister I wanted to go natural and we stopped perming and transitioned at the same time. We have been natural for almost a year.
How would you describe your texture?
Latoya: My texture is a mixture of 3c, 4a, 4b. The middle of my hair is the thickest part and where I spend the most time. My strands are very coarse. The back of my hair is very curly.
Latana: My texture does its own thing. My hair is very thick and the strands are very coarse. Some parts are soft and very curly. My hair texture is also a mixture of 3c, 4a, and 4b.
Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
Latoya: The most convenient style for me is the twist out. Water, Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie and Eco Styler Gel are a must have.
Latana: My favorite style is a chunky twist out. I two strand twist my hair at night. I spritz with water, rub with Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, coconut oil and Eco Styler Gel. Lastly, I take it out in the morning.
What does wash day look like for you?
Latoya: I start out by parting my hair in four sections. Next, I spray each section with water then finger detangle with coconut oil. I deep condition using Pantene Pro-V Truly Natural Conditioner. Finally, I use Vo5 Moisture Milks Conditioner as my co wash.
Latana: On my wash day, I wash my hair with Giovanni Tea Tree Triple Treat Shampoo. My hair gets crazy build up so I have to shampoo every week. I also do an apple cider vinegar rinse to cleanse my hair and scalp. I leave the apple cider vinegar in for a half hour then I rinse. Next, I detangle and deep condition with Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque. I leave this in for a half hour. Lastly, I style my hair wet with Giovanni Direct Leave-In Weightless Moisture Conditioner, coconut oil and Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie.
Describe your favorite go-to hairstyle for days when you don’t have a lot of time to style.
Latoya: My favorite go-to hairstyle would have to be the frohawk.
Latana: My Favorite go-to hairstyle is the pineapple or frohawk.
How do you combat shrinkage?
Latoya: It’s hard to fight shrinkage. I just style my hair however I want when it shrinks.
Latana: Shrinkage is inevitable. I’ve gotten more comfortable with my length. When it shrinks I just rock my chunky twist out or pineapple puff.
What are 2 do’s for your texture?
Latoya: Must condition and moisturize.
Latana: My hair must be moisturized and styled when wet.
What are 2 don’ts for your texture?
Latoya: Never apply Heat or comb when dry.
Latana: Never, ever comb when my hair is dry.
