Do you hear that? It’s the sound of singing birds resting on Cherry Blossoms covered in pink! For those of you traumatized by what has been a pretty brutal winter, I have good news: Spring is in the air! Now, while it may not quite feel like spring yet where you live, it is a good time to think about your spring hair regimen. Now, I am a summer girl through and through. The heat is my friend! But when it comes to hair care, spring, followed by fall is my favorite “hair season”. The weather is warm, yet not dry enough to cause the dryness to our hair that summer weather may cause. The damper weather is also a great time to use nature to your advantage and capture moisture in your hair.

Products

During April and May I find that there is much less need to use the heavy cream and butters that helped to seal in moisture during the colder months of winter.  If you don’t have a problem with glycerin, this season is probably the best time to incorporate lighter moisturizers with glycerin high on the ingredient list into your regimen. You can even purchase a bottle of glycerin, which is fairly inexpensive, and mix it with water and oil as a part of your post wash leave in. During the spring I also find that the oils I use no longer need to be thick or heavy. Rather than castor oil, for example, consider using almond oil or even jojoba, in order to create less of a barrier between your hair and the moisture in the air.

Styling

From the standpoint of maintaining hair health, I love spring. When it comes to styling, however, it can be a bit of a challenge. The increased moisture in the air and rainy days can make weather dependent styles, like straightened hair, twist outs, etc. more difficult to maintain. As a result, you may find that not only can you benefit from the added moisture of the air, but also have an added incentive to wear protective styles. I like to think of this 8-12 week period (I usually find that by late May/ early June summer weather replace spring weather) as a type of hair hibernation for my hair. Unlike winter, however, I can still enjoy “out” hair styles on the those gorgeous 70 degree days with dry air.

Routine

Although your products choices might change and you may have to switch up your styling options, I have good news for you: there really is no need to completely revamp the order of your routine. This is not only true for spring, but other seasons as well.  If you’ve found success with your general routine, don’t try to fix what isn’t broken. Other than the minor tweaks of hair product choice or styling, continue to maintain your regular wash schedule and order of your post wash detangling/moisturizing process.

Natural hair shouldn’t be any more difficult to manage as the seasons change.  While you may tweak a few things, you should generally be able to follow the rules you’ve created for yourself. After all, you know what works best for your hair.
