B: My name is Bevin Ashley and I live in Richmond, VA. I am a Public Relations Specialist and Fashion Blogger!
What is your style philosophy?
B: “Style” is a way of announcing who you are or what you’re about without having verbalized one word. It has the ability to offer strong insight into ones standards or personality, which is why I value the importance of my appearance. We are judged and often offered opportunities based upon our look/demeanor.
How would you describe your sense of style?
B: I’m sort of a “Style Chameleon”. I make sure I dress or style myself appropriately for the event or occasion I’m attending.
What is the process of deciding what to wear in the morning?
B: I believe in the importance of correlating your surroundings with your attire. My dress for the day often depends on my daily scheduled activities. If I’m spending a day at the office, I’ll go for a business casual look with classic cuts/shape, but if I’m networking or attending any sort of fashion/industry event, I’ll be more free in my color scheme and prints.
What are the three favorite things in your closet?
B: My 3 favorite items in my closet are currently my Alexander Wang Jumper, my PUMA Japanese Suede Mids and my brown Reptile Print Skirt from BCBG. I scooped my A. Wang jumper and BCBG skirt at a trendy consignment shop called Clementine. The Japanese Suede Mids were gifted to me through a recent promotional collaboration between PUMA and my blog. I love each of these because they are all statement pieces.
What are some of your favorite shops/websites for clothes, shoes and accessories?
B: I love to shop at consignment or second hand boutiques that sell high-end clothing. I also catch great finds at Need Supply Co. and Monkee’s of Richmond.
How long have you been natural?
B: I big chopped in April of 2011 and have since been on my healthy hair growth journey!
How and why did you transition into natural hair?
B: I transitioned for about 4 months before deciding to big chop.
What is your signature hairstyle?
B: For the most part I wear my hair down and out. I will rock a pineapple as my curls stretch and get old.
Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
B: During the warmer months I wash-n-go all the time and style in a pineapple. I rarely straighten my hair in the summer or when it’s warm. In the winter I do a lot of rod setting. It is not ideal to have wet or half dry hair when it is freezing outside, so I rod my hair to help maintain a natural look, but remain weather appropriate! I like to switch up my hair care products ever so often. Sometimes after extended use of the same thing my curls will start to wilt or my hair won’t look as dense. Whenever this happens I change it up.
My favorite products to alternate between are TRESemme’ Naturals Conditioner, Renpure Organics Argan Oil Conditioner, Trader Joe’s Tea Tree Tingle Conditioner, Carol’s Daughter Mimosa Hair Honey, Miss Jessie’s Soft Curls and Curly Meringue, Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum and Renpure Organics Argan Oil Deep Penetrating Oil Treatment. As a cleanser, I usually try to stick with Bragg Organic Apple Cider Vinegar. It clarifies and softens my hair. To nurture my curls, I use the Huetiful Hair Steamer. I steam my hair every 2 weeks while performing either a hot oil treatment or deep condition. I also try my best to finger-detangle my hair during washes. I believe doing this helps in retaining length.
Tell us about your hair color?
B: Prior to big chopping I had done a few home color jobs, which resulted in a lot of hair damage/breakage. The chemicals and stress of my perm and color had taken a toll on my ends. After big chopping, I became more serious about the chemical treatments done on my hair. Since then all of my color jobs have been professionally done. I haven’t experienced much change in my texture as a result.
