Style: Tanya in New York

tanya16

Introduce yourself!
T: My name is Tanya Jean-Baptiste.I am the quiet girl next door until you get to know me and see my silly side. I have lived in New York all my life and have recently moved to Brooklyn and love it. My day job is working at an outpatient hospital but I aspire to work in fashion. I started a fashion blog about a year ago and hope to take that further.

What is your style philosophy?
T: My style philosophy is to wear what YOU feel good in. You do not always have to follow trends. Know your body type and what works for you. At the end of the day YOU have to feel comfortable with what your wearing because that will translate in your body language and will speak louder than any print (even animal print).

How would you describe your sense of style?
T: My sense of style is “ever evolving”. It changes day to day. I dress for me. As individuals we are constantly growing. One day I may keep it simple and understated and then the next “over the top” and bold. That is where my instagram and blog name (ClothesConscience) came from.  I let my clothes start conversations for me as an extension of myself.

What is your process of deciding what to wear in the morning?
T: I REALLY try to plan my outfits in advance or else I create the biggest mess. In advance I keep three things in mind, occasion ( what type of event is this), weather and risk (if I feel like pushing the envelope how far can I go and still feel like myself and not offend anyone). In a rush I try and keep my clothes understated and jazz it up with accessories.=

What are the three favorite things in your closet?
T: Three favorite things in my closet (at the moment) are my biker jacket from Top shop, my ripped up BDG jeans from Urban Outfitters and my Christian Louboutin 120mm Pigalles.

What are some of your favorite shops/websites for clothes, shoes and accessories?
T: I love online shopping. I love sites such as ASOS, Nastygal, Sheinside and Minusey to name a few. I also love to shop at Zara, H&M and Topshop, the go to trifecta for any fashionista 🙂

How long have you been natural?
T: I have been natural all my life but only really started to care for my hair about three years ago after a heat damage experience. After a semi big chop I started doing my research and embraced a natural hair lifestyle.

What is your signature hairstyle?
T: My signature style is the pineapple or a pineapple with the front of my hair twisted and pinned abstractly. Most of my hairstyles are super simple they just look complicated.

Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
T: I wash my hair with shampoo every three to four weeks. On wash day I part my hair into four sections and lightly damp each section with water. Then I mix conditioner of my choice with some honey, castor oil and olive oil to apply to my hair. I cover my hair with a plastic cap and wrap my head with a towel and let that sit for two hours. Once in the shower I wash my hair with Ouidad Ultra Nourishing Cleansing Oil. I use Kinky-Curly Knot Today in the shower to de-tangle and apple cider vinegar as a clarifying rinse. After I have washed and re-twisted each section in the shower I dry my hair with an old t-shirt and apply my products to damp hair. Most of the time I apply Oyin handmade hair dew. I retwist or braid my hair into smaller sections to dry and seal my ends with castor oil. The following day I grease my scalp with coconut oil. From then until wash day I try and keep my hair moisturized with water and water based products. My hair regimen changes depending on the needs of my hair as my hair grows. It is important to switch things up when necessary.

Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?
T: I have a personal style blog at clothesconscienceblog.wordpress.com, instagram atclothesconscience, tumblr (so obsessed with) at clothesconscience.tumblr.com and twitter at closconscience.
